Chapter Eight
Arleth
My locked door meant I had to go with a new plan. One more dangerous, but I wasnât going to wait around until it was too late.
It was hard to feel my mate through the bond since it wasnât complete, but a surge of rage that eclipsed my own had hit me, and I knew he was awake. I had to hope he wasnât too hurt to escape with me once I set him free.
Slick still seeped from my core, traces of my mateâs seed combined with it, and I ran my hands through the fluid coating my thighs to spread it over my belly and chest. I hated that his scent wasnât on my skin, and having even that little bit helped bolster me and keep me focused.
I pulled on a simple smock and braided my hair back to keep it out of my face. I would have preferred pants like some of the working women wore, but Iâd never been allowed any, so I had to settle for what I had.
The window let out a shriek as I forced it open, and I winced, holding my breath as my heart thundered in my ears. When no footsteps sounded outside my door, I slipped on my sturdiest shoes and stepped up onto the sill.
The drop to the ground was enough to make my mouth go dry at the sight. I didnât trust my strength to climb all the way down even if there were easy footholds, but there was a shed only a little way to the side against the back of the house, and if I could get to its roof, Iâd be able to get to the ground.
The fear was enough to keep the edges of my need from taking over, and knowing my mate was out there nudged my instincts into helping instead of trying to drive me into my nest. What I needed wasnât here, so I had to go.
The crumbling mortar between the bricks was a blessing, allowing me to sink my fingers into the cracks far enough to feel secure. It was harder to wedge the toe of my shoe into the gap, but I managed, slowly shifting my weight from the foot still on the windowsill to the one on the wall.
My heart felt like a finch fluttering around inside the cage of my ribs. Terror tried to take over as I perched, frozen and trembling against the side of the wall, but I felt a surge of strength and calm flow through the bond. Enough for me to loosen one hand and reach over for a new hold.
It was slow going, the shadows steadily stretching as I worked my way over bit by bit until I hung above the shed. My arms shook, fingers and toes cramping, but I tried to hold on to the hope that all would be better soon. I just needed to get to my mate.
My foot slipped as I tried to stretch the other downward, terror stealing my breath as my fingers ripped from the wall.
